What
is Newmont Watch ?
Newmont
Watch is an autonomous and self-ruling division of Gagas Nusa Tenggara. This unusual and special status is given due to the fact that it was established and supported by collaboration of human rights, corruption watches, environmental, social justice, Indigenous and labor organizations from across the country. It addresses the urgent need for a coordinated public interest response to the threats to environment and community interests affected by any irresponsible policies and practices of PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara - a tributary of Newmont Mining Corporation operated in West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia.
Newmont
Watch is a direct response to government debility to protect the
local people’s interest and the environment from deceptive mining
contract and practice. With support of specialist organizations from
across the country, Newmont Watch perform the monitoring, analysis
and advocacy necessary to affect the behavior of PT. Newmont Nusa
Tenggara and public decision-makers.
As a non-profit and non-partisan organization, Newmont Watch is sterile from any political interest. As a self-ruling division, Newmont Watch is governed seperately from Gagas Nusa Tenggara by Board of Management comprised of a range of experts, community leaders and activists.
