Over the years various
human rights, corruption watches, environmental, social justice,
Indigenous and labor organizations have been pledged in localized
mining conflicts and campaigns arising from the damaging impacts
of mining projects. In spite of some remarkable challenges, these
disparate endeavors have clearly not been sufficient to make real
improvement in addressing the ecological and social impacts of
mining projects or to significantly modify the defective
regulatory regime for mining in Indonesia. That is why besides
advocating local people whose rights are harmed by PT. Newmont
Nusa Tenggara to file lawsuit against the company, Newmont Watch
itself – on behalf of the community – is also taking PT.
Newmont Nusa Tenggara to the court for any violation of public
interests.
Newmont Watch works to
wake people’s consciences and consciousness toward the potential
risk of mining project. The main activities of Newmont Watch are:
*
Monitor policies and practices of PT. Newmont Nusa
Tenggara and government agencies
|
*
Carry out and disseminate research highlighting current
problems and impacts posed by PT. Newmont Nusa Tenggara.
|
*
Promote a well-grounded public agenda for reviewing
contract regulatory and Newmont’s practices for the sake
of local communities
|
*
Increase regional intervention capacity by facilitating
information exchange, effective communications and joint
strategic initiatives among affected public stakeholders.
|
*
Link with other activists and NGOs around the world to
exchange information and strategies around specific
projects and corporations as well as policy and legal
questions.
